Here’s an unusual question: If the presidential candidates were like New York law firms, which ones would they be? Blogger and writer David Lat posed that question to a smattering of lawyers for a column in the New York Observer and came to this conclusion:

Hillary Clinton is like Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; and Barack Obama is like Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges.

Lat quoted a Paul Weiss lawyer who persuaded him of Hillary’s resemblance to the firm. “Like Hillary, Paul Weiss has a reputation for being a bit of a hard-ass,” the lawyer said. “But those who know her—and us—know we are ‘good people.’ Both a bit neurotic, but in a healthy way. Also, like Hillary, we’re ambitious. And gay-friendly!”

A future Cravath summer associate remarked on Obama’s resemblance to Quinn Emmanuel. “Both seem to be the young, upstart contenders, trying to do things a new way.”

Lat observed that Obama appeared to be more popular in his comparison survey. “Just as nobody wanted their firm to be Mrs. Clinton, nearly everyone tried to lay claim to the senator from Illinois,” he wrote.
