Updated: The acting chief financial officer of Freddie Mac has died in an apparent suicide, following reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission was questioning executives about the mortgage lender’s accounting practices.

David Kellerman was found dead in his Vienna, Va., home early today, according to the Washington Post and Bloomberg.

Mortgage giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were both being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Freddie Mac filings said Justice Department and SEC investigators had questioned executives about accounting methods, Bloomberg said.

Attorney General Eric Holder said today he has no idea if Kellerman’s apparent suicide was related to government investigations of Freddie Mac, Reuters reports.

Kellerman was promoted from corporate controller to acting CFO in September after the government seized control of Freddie Mac.

Updated at noon CT to include comments by Eric Holder.
