Does it pay to rein in your social media self-promotion a bit? The Huffington Post and New York Magazine both note separate studies that say it might.

Both studies focus specifically on “humblebrags”—statements that try to disguise a boast with a complaint of some sort. An example of a humblebrag from one of the studies: “I am so bored of people mistaking me for a model.” The upshot of both of the studies is that humblebrags don’t fool anyone, and study participants had negative perceptions of individuals who make such statements.

This week, we’d like to ask you: Are you barraged with “humblebrags” on social media or in person? From professional contacts, or from friends and family members? If so, share some with us (while respecting the privacy of nonpublic figures). We’d accept more straightforward examples of bragging as well.

Featured answer:

Posted by Okra: “I … miss the old, old phones. There was something so satisfying about banging the receiver down after dealing with an opponent trying to play you, which pushing hard on the face of your phone just cannot match.”
