A CIA officer who obtained U.S. citizenship through a sham marriage has pleaded guilty to conducting an illegal search on government computers for classified information about the Islamic terrorist group Hezbollah.

The plea deal by Nada Nadim Prouty, who had also worked at the FBI, raises questions about background checks performed on sensitive government employees, the New York Times reports. An October report concludes that the FBI has not taken needed security measures to prevent espionage after other security breaches, the Washington Post reports.

U.S. officials told the Post there is no indication that Prouty, a Lebanese immigrant, passed classified information to Hezbollah or other radical groups.
