The lawyer who led the defense of President Bill Clinton during impeachment hearings has been selected to be White House counsel in the Obama administration, according to two publications.

The Washington Post and New York Times cite unnamed sources who say the appointment of Gregory Craig will be formally announced later this week.

The Post says Craig was a foreign policy adviser to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. He has also represented high-profile clients including John Hinckley Jr., who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan, and Elian Gonzalez’s father, who successfully fought to have his son returned to Cuba.

He is a partner at Williams & Connolly, the Wall Street Journal Law Blog reports.

Updated at 10:28 a.m. to clarify the status of Craig’s clients and at 11:20 a.m. to include information from the Wall Street Journal Law Blog.
