Death Penalty in Calif. Costs $308M Per Execution, Say Law Prof and Federal Appellate Judge
In the more than 30 years since the death penalty was reinstated in California, it has cost the public about $308 million per execution on the 13 occasions it was imposed, says a study by a law professor and a federal appeals court judge.
And the cost will continue to climb, predict senior 9th U.S. Circuit Judge Arthur Alarcon and Paula Mitchell of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Their study is titled Executing the Will of the Voters: A Roadmap to Mend or End the California Legislature’s Multi-Billion-Dollar Death Penalty Debacle.
