The managing partner of Denver law firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck says he thinks community involvement helps keep lawyers happy. To that end, the law firm has created “karma committees” for lawyers and staffers to work on good deeds.

Managing partner and chief executive officer Bruce James told the National Law Journal that lawyers can get burned out or dissatisfied with law practice. But that didn’t seem to be the case at Brownstein. “When I joined Brownstein in the mid-80s, I was struck by how satisfied and happy the partners were,” he said. “I was convinced it was because of their participation in the community.”

The firm hired a community relations manager in 2007 who is matching lawyers and staffers with committees that work in their areas of community interest. Committee volunteers hosted Halloween activities at a public housing project, the story says. Other committees promote activities such as delivering flowers and candy to hospitalized children on Valentine’s Day.
