Elon University gets nod from ABA Legal Ed council to move forward on merger

The merger of the Elon University School of Law and the Queens University of Charlotte has moved a step forward, as the council of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar approved its plan to change the location of its part-time hybrid JD program to Charlotte, North Carolina, while launching a new full-time JD program.
The move would give Charlotte, North Carolina, its first law school since 2018. The city has been the largest U.S. city without a law school, according to Elon University’s website.
The full-time law program will launch in August 2027, and applications open Sept. 1, 2026, according to the website. It will replicate the existing academic calendar in Greensboro, North Carolina, which is a 2.5-year, seven-trimester program, Eric Townsend, an assistant vice president for strategic communications and media relations at Elon University, told the ABA Journal.
The program aims to enroll a class of about 75 students and for classes to begin in fall 2027, and full-time students in Charlotte would complete a full-time, course-connected residency-in-practice with a practicing attorney or a judge during their second year.
