A former law student lies in a coma after being beaten and stabbed while trying to sell his car through an online ad.

Akeem Ajimotokan had attended Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law from 2001 to 2003, but did not graduate, the New York Times reports. He was working in the procurement office at Columbia University when his attempt to sell his metallic blue 2008 BMW M3 ended in tragedy.

Police found Ajimotokan in the trunk of the car after the suspect crashed it into a taxicab and left the accident scene. Police say a bill of sale found in the car identified the man who claimed he wanted to buy the car as Barion Blake, an ex-con previously charged with stealing BMWs.

Police began chasing the car after seeing two men thought to be the suspect and an accomplice trying to replace the license plates, the New York Times reports in a previous story.
