Cynicism isn’t just a personality trait—it can also be a symptom of burnout, according to two researchers.

The study by researchers Christina Maslach and Michael Leiter found that burnout can lead to diminished work performance and family stress, Canwest News Service reports. A legal advice column in the Am Law Daily noted three symptoms of burnout: a feeling of being overwhelmed, cynicism about the job and a sense of personal failure.

The articles noted six causes of burnout:

  1. A big workload, without slower times to recover.

  2. Lack of control in how the job is done.

  3. No recognition or positive feedback for your efforts.

  4. Lack of a collegial, supportive atmosphere.

  5. Lack of fairness in decision-making.

  6. Organizational values that don’t match your own.
