Armed with a sharp intellect, great listening skills and wicked sense of humor, the 67-year-old dean of the University of Texas School of Law is trying to do something no dean there has ever done before.

The constitutional law scholar has promised to nearly double the law school endowment, by raising $200 million by 2014, reports the Austin American-Statesman, in a lengthy profile of Dean Lawrence Sager. He is doing so, with the help of a pleasing personality, by appealing to law graduates’ sense of pride in their school and their desire to see it become even more renowned.

“Hitting his $200 million target, Sager says, is crucial to attracting top faculty and the best students, essential ingredients in his drive to elevate the school from 16th in annual U.S. News and World Report rankings to the Top 10, alongside law schools such as Yale, Harvard and Stanford,” the newspaper writes. “For the past 20 years, UT School of Law has maintained a ranking in the Top 20 but never cracked the Top 10.”
