Howrey Lays Off 29 Associates and 65 Staffers
Updated: Howrey has confirmed layoffs of 94 people, including both associates and staffers.
Above the Law was the first to report that about 100 people were let go. Fewer associates lost their jobs than administrative staffers and paralegals, the blog said.
The law firm later detailed the exact numbers, telling the Am Law Daily that it laid off 29 associates and 65 staffers from Howrey’s 10 U.S. offices.
A Howrey statement issued to the ABA Journal says the reduction in force is part of an ongoing effort to meet the demands of a competitive marketplace. “The last 18 months have been rough for the legal profession,” the statement said. “Throughout 2009, like other firms, we saw the nature of the demand for legal services change extensively. We continue to make adjustments to meet those new realities.”
The statement adds that the firm is starting 2010 in good shape.
