An Illinois man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for trying to iron a shirt on the back of an 18-month-old girl.

Elliott Moore, 43, of Rockford, apparently didn’t realize that what he was doing would harm the child, according to the Rockford Register Star.

Moore, the child’s live-in caretaker, told police he was having difficulty ironing a shirt with the sleeping girl in his lap, so he placed the shirt over the girl’s back and began ironing.

When the girl woke up crying, he said, he realized he had burned her. So he put cold water on the burn and put the child in a sleeper. Then he packed a bag of clothes and left after the mother returned home.

The child’s mother told police her daughter was up crying all night. When she went to change the girl’s clothing, she noticed a large, open burn on her back.

Moore was convicted of aggravated battery on a child, which carries a sentencing range of 3 to 7 years. Because of the victim’s age, he was eligible for an extended term of up to 14 years.
