Proposed changes by a National Association for Law Placement commission in the group’s recommended schedule for law school recruiting are getting a mixed review by those responsible for student hiring.

Some, including partners charged with running a whirlwind schedule of on-campus interviews in short time under the current set-up, see a benefit to delaying until January the period during which job offers should be made, according to a lengthy National Law Journal article about reaction to the commission proposal. It is reprinted in New York Lawyer (reg. req.).

But others see disadvantages to the suggested new law school recruitment schedule. Among its fiercest critics is Jones Day.

“We have a very strong reaction, and frankly, it’s allergic,” firmwide hiring partner Gregory Shumaker tells the legal publication. Among other issues, he says the new system would favor BigLaw firms that, unlike Jones Day, deferred associate start dates in response to the struggling economy.

NALP is encouraging comment on the commission proposal until Jan. 29 and will then review the feedback and make a decision about how to proceed, an earlier American Lawyer article explains.
