A midsize Kansas City firm in the midst of merger talks isn’t waiting for that deal to expand.

Blackwell Sanders already dispatched the former head of its London office to recruit and kick-start a shop in Chicago, the Kansas City Star reports.

Partner John Mandelbaum has moved to Chicago and will be one of the resident partners there, the firm’s chairman Dave Fenley is quoted saying. Blackwell Sanders has nine offices in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Illinois, Washington, D.C. and London.

Meanwhile, Blackwell Sanders remains in merger talks with Husch & Eppenberger, a St. Louis-based firm with offices in Missouri, Tennessee and Illinois.

A combined firm would be 630 lawyers strong with annual revenues of $255 million, the Star reports.
