Some law firms are ditching the traditional leadership model that puts a single leader in charge.

Law firms are increasingly expanding leadership roles by creating more positions on executive committees or by moving management to an executive board, several legal consultants told the Legal Intelligencer (sub. req.).

The legal consultants identified several reasons for the trend. It allows managing partners to continue to practice law, it gives other partners a sense they are participating in management, and it helps groom the next generation of leaders.

One consultant–Frank D’Amore of Attorney Career Catalysts—said he hasn’t seen any trend. Most firms still vest power with one leader, though some do allow boards more say in day-to-day decisions, he told the Legal Intelligencer.

He also identified a drawback to allowing increased participation: The decision-making process gets bogged down when more people are involved.
