A California lawyer has pleaded guilty in a cash structuring case in which he, with the help of family, was accused of depositing some $300,000 into bank accounts in amounts of less than $10,000 and stashing cash in safe deposit boxes, in order to evade both financial institution reporting requirements and income tax.

Sole practitioner Anthony Luna, 71, of Montebello also will forfeit $250,000 including nearly $55,000 in cash found at his home. He could get as much as eight years when he is sentenced in August, reports the National Law Journal.

All the money was earned from lawful activities, says attorney Stewart Powell of Yacoubian & Powell, who represents Luna. “He’s taking responsibility for depositing the money the way he did and he’s accepted responsibility at an early stage.”

Luna’s daughter, Dianne Sanchez, 42, and brother Fred, 70, have also pleaded guilty conspiracy to structure cash transactions and structuring financial transactions, respectively. They could get as much as five years.
