Fast food giant McDonald’s is accused in a class action lawsuit of misleading customers that its popular McRib sandwich is made from real rib meat.

The popular, limited-time-only sandwich, made with a patty shaped like a small rack of ribs and smothered in barbecue sauce and onions, is at the center of a suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Coverage of the story appears in Axios, USA Today and other news outlets.

The complainants said they were lured into purchasing the McRib thinking that the patty was made from real pork rib and would not have purchased it if they knew otherwise. The Dec. 23 suit claims that the meat consists of “lower-grade pork products, such as, inter alia, pork shoulder, heart, tripe and scalded stomach.”

McDonald’s called the claims meritless.

“Our fan-favorite McRib sandwich is made with 100% pork sourced from farmers and suppliers across the U.S.,” McDonald’s said in a statement. “There are no hearts, tripe or scalded stomach used in the McRib patty. … We’ve always been transparent about our ingredients so guests can make the right choice for them.”
