sketch Gabay shooting

Sketch of man wanted for questioning by the New York Police Department Twitter account.

Police have released a sketch of a man wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting early Monday of Carey Gabay, a lawyer for New York state who formerly worked for two large law firms.

Gabay, 43, is hospitalized in critical condition, the New York Times reports. He has been in a coma since he was shot in the head as he was celebrating the West Indian holiday of J’ouvert before the West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn. Police believe Gabay was the unintended victim in a gang shooting.

Gabay is a lawyer for New York state’s economic development agency, the Empire State Development Corp. A Harvard law graduate, he was previously an assistant counsel to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and a former associate at Jones Day and Schulte Roth & Zabel.

Police are offering a $12,500 reward for information that leads to the indictment of the gunman. The sketch can be found in the Times story and this Brooklyn Daily Eagle story with contact numbers to submit tips.

Gabay grew up in a housing project in the North Bronx, the New York Times reports in this story. As a teen he worked for the Bronx Corps cleaning up parking lots and playgrounds. He attended Harvard as an undergraduate studying government, where he became president of the undergraduate council and worked a job delivering the college newspaper that required him to get up at 5:30 a.m.

At Schulte Roth, Gabay worked on complex structured finance transactions. One of his supervisors, Ed O’Connell, said Gabay “was just tireless,” working 10 to 12 hours a day, weekends and sometimes all night long. O’Connell jumped to Jones Day and recruited Gabay to join the firm.
