San Francisco’s Human Rights Commission is discussing a measure to protect ex-cons from discrimination in housing and employment.

Former convicts are already protected from discrimination in jobs with the city and in housing run by the San Francisco Housing Authority, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The proposal would extend the bias ban to private landlords and employers.

Sex offenders and some violent convicts would not be protected under the proposed law.

Proponents say the law would help former convicts integrate into society at a time when California prisons will be releasing inmates because of overcrowding, the Associated Press reports.
