Standing Desks Gain Popularity in Silicon Valley
Standing desks, touted as a healthy alternative, are getting a boost in popularity in the Silicon Valley.
Google and Facebook are getting increasing requests for the desks from their workers, the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) reports. They are spurred by news reports finding too much sitting contributes to obesity and health risks.
Facebook has more than 2,000 employees, and between 200 and 250 have standing desks, the story says. The company is also trying treadmill desks that allow workers to walk while they work. Google says it offers standing desks as part of its wellness program.
Some law firms are also trying out treadmill or standing desks, including Quarles & Brady, according to a story published in 2009.
