Last week, we invited readers to vent their stories of lawyer incivility.

This week, at the suggestion of a reader and in the spirit of the season, we would like to ask: What acts of kindness and generosity you have seen from other lawyers? Have they inspired you to be more benevolent?

We hope we will have more answers this week than last.

Posted by HJ: “Incivility takes many forms, many of which I don’t see in my practice (mostly contracts, general corporate and M&A), but I see enough. A (not the only) major solution to this problem is to ban billing by the hour. If lawyers were required, for example, to bill on a fixed-fee basis, they wouldn’t spend as much time (in any type of legal matter) demanding this or that, reworking documents for no apparent reason, taking the useless depo of everyone in sight and so forth. I don’t care about all these individual experiences, although I can believe them, but pervasive solutions usually require general rules—and this is one of them.”
