The lawyer who once headed a government agency that protects federal whistle-blowers has received a one-month sentence for withholding information after he scrubbed information from his computer.

Scott Bloch, the former U.S. special counsel, got prison time even though he and the prosecutor both sought a sentence of probation, the Associated Press reports. Bloch plans an appeal.

Bloch had called Geeks on Call to erase files on his computer in 2006 as investigators probed allegations that he had abandoned whistle-blower cases and retaliated against employees who disputed his policies. Later he withheld information from congressional investigators looking into the computer scrub, he admitted when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of criminal contempt of Congress.

The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times covered Bloch’s comments at sentencing. He thanked Jesus and said he believes “good will come out of this case.”
