A woman who raised a baby kidnapped from a New York hospital in 1987 has been criminally charged and the FBI says she confessed, reports the Associated Press.

Wanting a baby that she was unable to have herself, Ann Pettway admitted that she took 19-day-old Carlina White when she saw her at the hospital, the FBI says.

Initially arrested under a North Carolina warrant for an unrelated matter, Pettway has now been charged with kidnapping by federal prosecutors in Manhattan, reports the Metropolis blog of the Wall Street Journal.

White, who had long suspected she wasn’t Pettway’s biological child, identified herself as the victim after seeing a photograph of herself as a baby online that looked very similar to one taken by the family that raised her.
