2 Lawyers Among 17 Charged in $3M Mortgage Rescue Fraud

Two New York lawyers are among 17 defendants charged in a mortgage rescue fraud case announced today by the Queens District Attorney’s Office.

Contacted by distressed owners seeking to save their homes from foreclosure, the defendants allegedly responded by stripping $3 million in equity from 26 properties, leaving the owners worse off than they were to begin with, according to NY1 News.

A press release (PDF) from the district attorney’s office provides additional details.

The two lawyers named as defendants are Shawn Chand, 34, and Trevor Rupnarain, 48. Rupararain is also a registered real estate broker and maintains a real estate office as well as a law office in Queens, the release says.

The NY1 News article doesn’t include any comment from the defendants, who are charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
