Besides mediating contract disputes and raising two children, Canada lawyer Christine Kilby has got jokes. She’s been doing standup at various Toronto clubs, and her skills will be showcased at an all-lawyer comedy show later this month.
This will be the fourth annual event, titled “Good Laughs,” and tickets are already sold out, the Law Times reports.
Initially, performers were comedians who became lawyers, but more recently, they are lawyers who became interested in doing standup, according to the article.
Ticket sales will benefit the Michael Garron Hospital, located in Toronto.
Michael Currie, another Toronto lawyer, founded the show, according to his law firm bio.
Standup, he told the publication, is basically “cross-training for lawyers.” To be good at comedy or law, he noted, you need good writing skills and a strong stage presence.
The business lawyer compared it to “a runner who picks up swimming to help their lung capacity.”
Kilby agrees. And if you are in front of a judge or an audience, she said, you can tell if you’re bombing.
