A Catholic priest who counsels engaged couples says divorcing celebrities should have known that falling deeply in love does not necessarily mean the marriage will work.

The latest celebrity divorce involves famed New York Yankees third baseman Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez, whose wife Cynthia Rodriguez filed for divorce earlier this week. The press is also following the divorce trial of Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook.

Father Pat Connor told columnist Maureen Dowd about the kinds of people who don’t make good spouses. They are the people with no friends, who don’t use money responsibly, who have no sense of humor, don’t communicate, tell lies, are given to fits of anger, are secretive, want to control others, or have families whose values you don’t like. And don’t think that you can get an addict to change his or her ways, Connor says, since people are the same after marriage as before.

Most marriages, he said, have problems because of money. Cynthia Rodriguez is instead pinning the blame on material girl Madonna, who has denied a relationship with the baseball player. Brinkley, though, seemed to touch on Connor’s warning signs when she testified that her husband was a “master of deception” and a sex addict who was unfaithful.

Psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Herman testified that Brinkley should get custody of the children, but she needs to examine her taste in men, the Associated Press reports.
