Still reeling from last week’s murder of five citizens at a Kirkwood, Mo., municipal council meeting by a disgruntled litigant, officials in other St. Louis area municipalities are now discussing whether they need to increase security.

For example, officials in nearby Madison County, Ill., are talking about what can be done to make the county administration building more secure, yet still provide needed public access, reports the Edwardsville Intelligencer.

The tragedy in Kirkwood, “reminded me once again of the situation at the administration building,” Madison County State’s Attorney Bill Mudge told other officials during a recent judiciary committee meeting, noting that “security here is nonexistent during normal working hours.

“There are multiple access points to this building,” he says, “and I believe it remains the most unsecure building in county government that I’m familiar with.”

As detailed in an earlier ABAJournal.com post, the gunman who committed the Thursday night murders in Kirkwood was shot and killed by authorities during the fray.
