A Chicago Bar Association-sponsored trip to Cuba staged so Chicago judges and lawyers could learn more about the Cuban legal system could lead to some baseball diplomacy.

Chicago and Cuban officials are discussing a “Caribbean classic” baseball series with the Chicago Cubs, according to Crain’s Chicago Business (sub. req.).

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke told Crain’s she attended a meeting to discuss the idea. “We talked about how sports can transcend this [economic] embargo by having people-to-people contact,” Burke said. “It’s a Cubs challenge, but we talked about all the possibilities of the White Sox as well.”

Burke’s husband, Chicago Alderman Ed Burke, confirmed the report in an interview with WLS-TV. He said he hand-delivered a letter by Cubs owner Tom Ricketts to Havana’s vice mayor that outlined the proposal.
