The presiding judgeship of New York’s appeals court in Brooklyn is a popular job.

According to the New York Times, “fully half of the court’s 19 judges have applied for the job” in “a backstabbing competition to get the attention of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.” The newspaper ventures a reason why so many applicants stepped forward: the offices of Brooklyn’s top judge are said to be the best chambers in the state.

“Could it be that some of them can just picture themselves padding across that royal blue and ruby red Persian carpet to the oversize elm desk?” the story asks.

The offices have 15-foot ceilings, walnut paneling, antique furnishings, a porcelain bathroom, damask curtains and a tranquil view.

The accommodations aren’t nearly as impressive for the state’s chief judge, Jonathan Lippman. He “conducts meetings at a table about the size of a dinner plate in his cramped Manhattan chambers,” the Times says.
