The California Supreme Court has upheld a four-year law license suspension for a former assistant Santa Clara District Attorney found to have committed “inexcusable” violations of ethical rules requiring prosecutors to apprise defense lawyers of exculpatory evidence.

Ben Field could still take his case to federal court on constitutional grounds, but this would be a long shot, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

The newspaper provides links on a web page to its extensive prior reporting on justice-system issues related to Field and other prosecutors.

Supporters argued that the rules applied to Field may not have been clear at the time and said his disciplinary case could have a chilling effect on prosecutors.
