A federal grand jury in Massachusetts is reportedly investigating whether the district attorney for the Cape and Islands protected gambling bookmakers.

The Boston Globe says the probe of District Attorney Michael O’Keefe resulted from a wiretap of an alleged bookmaking operation. Its story is based on anonymous sources said to have direct knowledge of the probe.

The grand jury is also investigating whether O’Keefe gave favorable treatment to the grandson of a bookmaker in a case involving the theft of electronics and other items from cars and boats, the story says. A local judge testified there was no special treatment, and O’Keefe never contacted him about the case.

O’Keefe issued a statement denying any wrongdoing. “Some information has apparently been leaked from a federal grand jury concerning illegal betting,’’ he said. “I do not now nor have I ever had any association with gaming. Any assertion of wrongdoing by me or my office is completely false.’’
