Kidnapped as a 19-day-old infant from a New York hospital in 1987, after her mother took her in to be treated for 104-degree fever, the now 23-year-old victim has been found alive and well.

Trying to find out more about her background, Carlina White contacted the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children after spotting her own baby photos online and seeing how similar they were to one the family she lives with had snapped. DNA testing confirmed that she is the missing victim, reports the New York Post.

Her mother, Joy White, tells the newspaper she is overjoyed—and able to sleep well for the first time since her daughter went missing.

“I’ve been worried for all these years,” she says. “I never took her picture off my dresser.”

There is no word on whether finding Carlina White is expected to lead to any criminal charges. However, there is no statute of limitations on kidnapping, the Post notes.

A New York Daily News article, crediting Joy White for the information, says authorities are searching for the drug-addicted woman who took her daughter and then left her with others to rear.

Carlina White grew up in Connecticut and has most recently been living in Georgia.

White and Earl Tyson, who is Carlina White’s father, settled in 1992 for $750,000 with Harlem Hospital, where their daughter was kidnapped.
