A sports columnist for the Washington Post who fell into the icy water of a canal while trying to save his dog credits a George Washington law student for saving his life.

First-year student Jason Coates was jogging along the canal and went to the aid of the columnist, Mike Wise, who had saved his dog but could not pull himself out of the freezing water, ABC 7 News reports.

“I tried to grab him and pull,” Coates said. “The ice broke, and I went in chest-deep.”

Together the two men managed to get out of the canal. Coates told Wise his name and that he was a GW student before leaving the scene, GWHatchet.com reports. Wise later called the law school and met Coates so he could thank him in person.

Coates remained modest about his heroism. “Maybe I did [save his life] but it’s something anyone in the same circumstance would have done,” he told GWHatchet.com.
