More than half a dozen Chicago-area towing companies participated in a scheme to tow U-Haul trucks and trailers without authorization, forcing the company to pay hefty fees amounting to thousands of dollars, a lawsuit alleges.

U-Haul of Illinois filed the Cook County Circuit Court suit last week against 14 defendants, including individuals. It seeks a court order prohibiting unauthorized tows and damages of more than $50,000, reports the Chicago Tribune (reg. req.).

The complaint alleges towing companies paid unidentified customers to pretend to have had breakdowns. The customers would then turn the vehicles over to the defendant towing companies, instead of authorized roadside assistance companies listed in rental documents, the suit claims.

A single customer was allegedly involved in three towing incidents.

The Tribune article doesn’t include any comment from the defendants.
