A suspect in a string of San Francisco bank robberies attributed to the “straw hat bandit” has been arrested.
Indicted Tuesday on charges of robbing three banks and trying to rob a fourth, Richard Laurence Stewart was located by police after a teller in one of the robberies spotted the suspect making a getaway in a taxi, according to Courthouse News and the San Francisco Chronicle.
With the help of the cab company, authorities traced the phone call for the taxi to Stewart, 52. And, in a subsequent search of his home by police and the FBI, more evidence was found. It included hats, a wig, a fake beard and a note that read: “This is a robbery. Remain calm and discreet.”
