A little over two weeks ago, Tom Zachry won the Republican judicial primary in a race for the 432nd District Court bench in Tarrant County, Texas. There is no Democratic opposition.

Now the 66-year-old Fort Worth attorney is missing, after his bass fishing boat capsized Friday in Aquilla Lake in Hill County and he tried to swim to shore, reports the Star-Telegram.

A search of the lake, which is about 65 miles south of Fort Worth, was called off on Sunday because of windy conditions but was to resume today. A 75-year-old friend clung to the overturned boat for hours before being spotted and rescued. He is being treated for hypothermia.

However, the Dallas Morning News is now reporting that Zachry is presumed dead and the search is now for his body.

Zachry’s lifelong dream was to be a judge, reports the Associated Press

“You win a hard election and are on top of the world, and then it’s time to leave?” mused Johnson County District Attorney Dale Hanna, a longtime friend of Zachry’s. “I don’t understand that. I guess that’s the way life works sometimes.”
