Interested in learning more about civil rights law? The ABA is offering a free two-day virtual summit for all lawyers and law students interested in advocating for justice and equality.
The Civil Rights Lawyer Boot Camp, which is scheduled for March 7 and 14, aims to highlight the foundations of civil rights law and provide advice on how to build a career or a practice in this area. It also offers strategies for advocating for underrepresented communities and navigating the intersection of civil rights law and other practice areas.
Training the next generation of civil rights attorneys and equipping more legal professionals with a strong civil rights foundation is critical in the current climate, says Lacy Durham, the chair of the ABA Civil Rights and Social Justice Section, which is leading the initiative.
“The very fabric of our democracy is being tested,” Durham says. “We are witnessing increasing threats to civil rights and fundamental liberties that have long been cornerstones of American democracy. We need a new wave of well-trained, strategic and passionate advocates who can fight for justice in the courts, legislatures and communities.”
Durham emphasizes that practicing civil rights lawyers who want to expand their expertise, as well as lawyers who want to take on civil rights pro bono cases or instill civil rights principles in their own practices, also are invited to attend the boot camp.
“Embedding civil rights into the practices of more attorneys—regardless of their specialty—means that justice can be advanced in all areas of law,” she says. “Whether in corporate law, education law, employment law or beyond, attorneys who understand and prioritize civil rights help create a legal system that upholds fairness and equality for all.”
Those interested in attending can find more information and register on the Civil Rights Lawyer Boot Camp website.
