Two well-known litigators are leaving Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison to launch a new U.S. Supreme Court and appellate practice group at Davis Polk & Wardwell.
Paul Weiss litigation co-chair and Washington, D.C., office chair Kannon Shanmugam and partner Masha Hansford are making the move in the wake of Brad Karp’s resignation from his longtime role as chairperson of the law firm, Law.com reports.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Justice released emails that offered a deeper look into Karp’s relationship with disgraced multimillionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Shanmugam’s and Hansford’s exits from Paul Weiss also comes a little over a year since the firm reached a deal with the Trump administration to avoid a punitive executive order, Law.com reports.
Shanmugam was a partner at Williams & Connolly before joining Paul Weiss in January 2019, according to Law.com. Hansford was an associate at Williams & Connolly from 2013 to 2019 before becoming counsel at Paul Weiss. She left Paul Weiss for the DOJ, where she worked as an assistant to the solicitor general from 2020 to 2025. She then rejoined Paul Weiss as a partner.
A spokesperson for Paul Weiss told Law.com, “We thank Kannon and Masha for their contributions and wish them well in their future endeavors.”
