2 suspects arrested in home invasion slaying of American lawyer in Venezuela
Two suspects have been arrested in the slaying less than two weeks ago of an American corporate lawyer practicing in Venezuela.
The South American country’s attorney general, Luisa Ortega Díaz, announced the arrests of Juan Carlos Pimentel Pacheco, 24, and Antoni José Rodríguez Moreno, 26, during a Tuesday radio broadcast. They were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in the killing of attorney John Ralston Pate, 70, according to the Associated Press and Fox News.
Details of what led authorities to suspect the two are not provided. A third man, who is not identified, is reportedly being questioned.
Pate, who had been fatally stabbed, and his 67-year-old girlfriend, who was injured but still alive, were found in his Caracas home Aug. 9. His son, a lawyer in the Miami office of White & Case, suggested that the slaying may have been a botched robbery or kidnapping.
