ABA President Stephen N. Zack has been named the Hispanic National Bar Association’s lawyer of the year.

Zack, who fled Cuba at the age of 14 with other family members, is the first Hispanic president of the ABA. He is being recognized for that achievement and for his new ABA projects focusing on the needs of Hispanics, according to an ABA press release.

Zack created a Commission on Hispanic Legal Rights and Responsibilities that will identify legal barriers to full participation in the U.S. justice system by the Latino community. Within the next eight weeks, the commission will begin holding hearings in cities across the country.

The commission will be headed by Greenberg Traurig executive chairman Cesar Alvarez of Miami. The honorary commission chairman is musician Emilio Estefan.

“Hispanics are now over 20 percent of our population and the largest minority in our country, but make up only 3 percent of our profession,” Zack said in the press release. “Hispanics must be fully integrated into our profession and our society.”
