An artist in Massachusetts has gathered the necessary signatures to put on the ballot in her district one of the most unusual issue voters anywhere the state are being asked to decide this election season.

It is: Whether women should have equal nudity rights with men, reports the Boston Globe.

Presently, those who bare their breasts could be charged with a misdemeanor for indecent exposure, while men, of course, are generally free to go shirtless.

Katherine Gundelfinger, 39, says she hopes the measure will pass and encourage voters elsewhere to follow suit and doff shirts. However, local opinion varies.

Mayor James Ruberto of Pittsfield complains that the issue is hardly earthshaking at a time of economic turmoil and other major concerns that must also be dealt with.

However, bar-owner Mark Papas, 55, sees a number of plus factors to the proposal. “A woman’s body is a beautiful thing,’’ he tells the newspaper, noting that he supports women’s rights. Plus, he says of the ballot measure, “I can see where it would be a real boon to tourism.’’
