A Cuban lawyer who criticized his government’s legal system in a talk to visiting Florida lawyers has received a full scholarship to Duke University School of Law.

Osvaldo Miranda Diaz received the scholarship as a result of the efforts of one of the visiting lawyers, the Daily Business Review (sub. req.) reports. He plans to start classes this fall.

Miranda Diaz was reportedly harassed by the Cuban government for some of his comments to the lawyers, who were in Florida for a trip coordinated by the International Law Section of the Florida Bar, the story says. The lawyers paid their own way. Miranda Diaz didn’t realize a reporter from the Daily Business Review was among those present.

Miranda Diaz said the justice system is “disgusting” and “there is no due process,” according to a May 28 article (sub. req.) by the Daily Business Review.

Miami solo Eddy Leal, who sits on the board of Duke’s law school, was able to secure the scholarship. Now lawyers from the section are trying to raise money for Miranda Diaz’s room and board.
