The Justice Department is planning to enlist military attorneys as temporary prosecutors to help with increased federal law enforcement efforts in Manhattan, Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Opportunities for active and reserve officers of any rank to serve as special assistant U.S. attorneys are being advertised for the Southern District of New York, the Central District of California and the Eastern District of California, according to an email sent Thursday by a Marine Corps major.

Responsibilities are described as “immigration related,” and connected to an expected “surge in federal law enforcement efforts,” according to a report by Bloomberg Law.

The positions are advertised as 179-day terms beginning Oct. 13 or later. A Justice Department statement didn’t address questions about the scope of the surge, according to Bloomberg Law.

Los Angeles saw a surge in federal immigration enforcement during summer 2025.
