Jonathan Nichols was still a law student at Seattle University when he started getting some unusual texts and messages on his new cellphone.

The invitations to test-drive Ferraris or a Lamborghinis and suggestive photos of women clearly weren’t meant for him, the Seattle Times reports. And Nichols also refused the free backstage passes, since he didn’t want to pretend to be someone else and potentially adversely impact his legal career.“‘No false representations’ is one of the rules of the bar,” Nichols said.

But it wasn’t until a blizzard of birthday messages arrived for “Anthony Ray” one Aug. 12 that Nichols, now a 33-year-old public-interest lawyer at Moriarty and Associates in Seattle, made the connection. He had a former phone number for Six Mix-A-Lot. The legendary Seattle hip-hop artist and Rhyme Cartel Records founder was born Aug. 12, and his real name is Anthony Ray.

Alerted by the newspaper, Sir Mix-A-Lot apologized on Twitter and offered some advice to Nichols: “Don’t say yes” when answering text messages, because you may not know what you are committing yourself to.

Meanwhile, Nichols has found a legitimate way to make use of the connection.

“When interviewers have asked me, ‘What’s something interesting that no one else knows?’ or when people I meet working political campaigns tell me about meeting Bill Clinton, I always say, ‘I have Sir Mix-A-Lot’s old phone number,’ ” he told the Times. “It’s a total mic drop.”
