A Delaware man who allegedly was admitted to Harvard University and won nearly $50,000 in scholarships and prizes as an English major there based on lies and plagiarism had been admitted to Stanford University this coming fall as a transfer student.

However, following publicity about the Massachusetts criminal case against Adam Wheeler, a Stanford spokeswoman tells the Choice blog of the New York Times that he will not be enrolling there.

According to filings by prosecutors released today in the Middlesex Superior Court case and information from authorities, it appears that Wheeler applied to Stanford as a transfer student around the time that he left Harvard last year after being accused by university officials of cheating on his application for a Rhodes scholarship.

Asked how it was that Wheeler apparently eluded presumed safeguards to prevent students at top colleges and universities from falsifying application materials, the spokeswoman, Lisa Lapin, said the admission process is confidential but noted that a variety of required documents are sent directly by the sources, such as testing agencies and schools, the Times reports.

Wheeler has pleaded not guilty.
