The legal services sector added 4,500 jobs in December, hitting an all-time high, according to seasonally adjusted and preliminary figures released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The legal sector had 1,190,500 jobs in December, surpassing the previous high of 1,187,900 jobs set in July 2022, Reuters reports.

It was the second month of gains, after the sector added 3,700 jobs in November, according to the preliminary figures.

In December 2022, the legal sector had 10,100 fewer jobs.

The legal sector first surpassed 1 million jobs in December 1997 and then surpassed 1.1 million jobs in November 2001, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics chart dating back to 1990.

The jobs number is based on payroll jobs for attorneys and staff members working at law firms providing legal services. The jobs data can change in recent monthly revisions, as well as the annual look-back process.
