A New Jersey judge has ruled that 14 gamblers who capitalized on a card-shuffling issue to win $1.5 million from the Golden Nugget have to return the money.

Judge Donna Taylor of Atlantic City ruled against the gamblers on Monday, the Associated Press reports. The gamblers had increased their bets in April 2012 when they realized the casino was using unshuffled cards in games of mini-baccarat, winning 41 hands in a row. The gamblers had detected the pattern in the unshuffled cards, which were supposed to have been pre-shuffled by the manufacturer.

Taylor ruled the games of mini-baccarat were illegal under state law because they didn’t adhere to regulations on how the game was supposed to be played, the story says.

The casino has resolved a lawsuit against the manufacturer that failed to shuffle the cards. The terms can’t be revealed under a confidentiality agreement.
