Lawyer posted viral YouTube video of police 'rape joke' captured on dashcam
A Texas attorney investigating an auto accident case wasn’t positively impressed by a conversation between two officers caught on an Austin police dashcam video making off-the-cuff comments about a woman passing by.
So Drew Gibbs posted it Thursday on YouTube, where it has had more than 225,000 views as of Monday, KVUE reports.
A CBS Houston article provides a transcript of what was said. The chatting officers spot a woman outside their window, and the following dialogue takes place:
Officer 1: Look at that girl over there.
Officer 2: (blows whistle) Go ahead and call the cops. They can’t unrape you. (laughter)
Officer 1: You didn’t turn your camera off, did you?
Officer 2: They can’t unrape you.
“What really stuck out to me was what followed the rape joke,” he told the station. “That was the officer’s comment, ‘I hope you turned your camera off.’ And I know that the vast majority of officers are out there protecting and serving people and do an important job, but there [is] a percentage of those who are either violating people’s rights or committing crimes or just being inappropriate, and all too often what I see is an effort by the police, even some of the supposedly good officers, trying to hide that.”
Gibbs, who works for the Carlson Law Firm, got the webcam footage under a public records request for material related to the accident.
The police department apologized Friday to sexual assault victims and is investigating, KXAN reports.
