Lawyer's Suit Against Chipotle Claims He Was Falsely Told Pinto Beans Were Vegetarian
A California lawyer has filed a lawsuit against Chipotle Mexican Grill that alleges employees falsely told him the restaurant’s pinto beans were not made with pork.
The suit by lawyer Kevin Shenkman seeks class action status on behalf of California consumers with dietary concerns who bought the beans. Shenkman is vegetarian and Jewish, and does not eat pork. Reuters and the Washington Post’s GOGBlog covered the lawsuit, filed last month.
Shenkman claims negligent and intentional misrepresentation, fraud, and violation of California laws barring false advertising and unfair business practices
Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold tells Reuters the restaurant’s pinto beans have always been made with bacon “and we have not described them as being vegetarian.” To avoid confusion, he says, the restaurant will post new menu boards noting the pinto beans are made with bacon. Vegetarian customers should instead opt for the black beans, he adds.
